Mesothelioma Asbestos
The words “mesothelioma asbestos” will strike fear into anyone who understands the impact of these words. For years asbestos was used as an insulating material in office buildings, schools and other areas. Asbestos is a very good insulator, however unfortunately it also causes mesothelioma cancer and can appear as long as 40 years after an individual was exposed to the asbestos fibers. Fortunately asbestos is no longer used as an insulator and where it is used, workers take special precautions to ensure that they do not inhale the fibers or even swallow the fibers unknowingly.
At the time, anyone working with insulation like asbestos just breathed the air with no protection at all. They breathed in some of the fibers and these fibers became lodged in the lungs and as time progressed, would penetrate the wall of the lungs into the tissue that surrounds the lungs. This tissue is called the mesothelium and protects all of the organs in the abdomen and the chest areas as they move around within these areas. The mesothelium really acts as a lubricant for the lungs and other organs.
Once the asbestos fibers lodged in this tissue, they may not cause any problem or even as long as 40 years later they can cause cancerous cells to begin generating in this area of the body. This combination of mesothelioma asbestos can affect the lungs, the heart in rare cases and the stomach also in rare cases.
If you are experiencing symptoms such as pain in the lower back, shortness of breath, difficulty swallowing, cough, fever, fatigue or abdominal pain you should see a doctor. If you were exposed to asbestos sometime in your life, your doctor also needs to know this as well.
Depending on the stage of your cancer, treatment can consist of surgery, radiation and / or chemotherapy. Most mesothelioma asbestos cancers are not diagnosed until they are well advanced and patients are faced with mounting medical bills. Court settlements have averaged $1 million while cases that have gone to court have averaged as high as $6 million.
